Sheyla Pichardo was holding her mother’s hand as they walked to her school in West New York, NJ, on Monday morning. Moments later, a Chevy struck them, injuring the mother and tragically killing the 7-year-old.
The following day, the young girl’s father, Javier Pichardo, broke down in tears as he spoke at a news conference. He thanked law enforcement for quickly tracking down the driver, who was arrested and charged. His girlfriend was also taken in for “hindering apprehension,” according to news reports.
While emphasizing the pain he feels of losing his only child, Mr. Pichardo also said he hopes the devastating situation will be a lesson for other parents.
“I am heartbroken. I lost my daughter. This is not an easy situation,” Pichardo said. “I want everybody to learn from this experience and to take care of their kids. I speak from the bottom of my heart. Take care of your kids. God bless the children.”
Additionally, the mourning father also spoke some unexpected words to the driver responsible for the horrific crime that rightfully left those listening emotional. It’s a powerful moment, reminiscent to the time a mother hugged the person responsible for killing her own daughter.
